TV Obsessions: Casual

Wednesday, September 21, 2016

Casual is a comedy series based around three main characters: Alex - casual dater and creator of a dating website, Valerie - newly-divorced therapist, and Laura - Valerie's teenager daughter. They are a dysfunctional family who coach each other through the world of dating.

If you don't already know, I'm a quite serious person and I despise comedy films and TV shows. However, Casual is an exception. It's a comedy but it's presented in such a way that you don't actually feel it. The show has been created in a way that generates a very natural reaction from the viewer.

The actors complement each other so well and their chemistry really radiates throughout the series. I can't even decide on a favourite character because each one of them brings something different to the table. There's some wonderful regulars and guest-stars too such as Leia who is Valerie's assistant and Leon who is just impossible to not love!

Casual is light-hearted but when you look a little deeper there's so much more going on. It's nice to watch the characters casually dating but it's also nice see them dealing with their emotional issues.  It's different from the shows I normally watch but I feel like it's a breath of fresh air, it deals with deeper issues in such a light way. I tried to think of something I don't like about this show but my mind is blank!

Two seasons of Casual have aired in the past year and they've  been so successful that a third season is in the works and will be aired in 2017 however there's no release date yet. Each episode of Casual is about 30mins long so it's quite easy to watch and it won't overwhelm you like some 1 hour episodes of other shows. If you do decide to watch Casual, I guarantee that you won't want to stop so maybe don't plan anything for the weekend.

Casual is a Hulu original series but as I don't live in the US, I watched it (sorry, binge-watched it) on Amazon Video.  If you don't have Amazon Prime then unfortunately you have to pay  to watch it but in all honesty I think it's worth it. I wouldn't recommend something you have to pay for unless I genuinely thought it was good because I'm not one to waste money. But if you are on a budget then stay tuned for more TV reviews on SILVXR of TV shows you can watch for free.

Have you watched Casual? If not, would you watch it?
